Profile pictures, avatars, and app icons are almost always displayed as circles, but the photo behind them is nearly always a plain rectangle, which is why a naive square crop still shows corners where a round frame expects transparency instead. This tool crops your photo to a perfect circle and exports it as a PNG with a transparent background outside that circle, so the cutout drops cleanly onto any colored background, dark mode included, without a visible square edge showing through.

How it works

1. Upload a headshot or close-up photo

Load the headshot or close-up subject you want circled by tapping to browse your device's files, dropping it onto the box above, or pasting it in from your clipboard. A headshot or a close-up subject works best here, since the circular frame naturally trims away more of the edges than a square crop would, leaving less room for background clutter near the border. The photo loads entirely on your device the instant it's added, with the whole file staying local rather than being sent anywhere for the round crop to be prepared.

2. Position the round crop box

A circular hint overlay appears on top of your photo, locked to a perfect 1:1 circle so it can be moved and resized but never stretched into an oval. Drag the circle over your face or subject, using a corner handle to make it larger or smaller while it stays centered on whatever point you last dragged it to. Everything outside the circle dims so you can judge exactly what will be cut away and what will remain, the same visual cue a photo editor's round-crop tool gives you, and you can nudge the circle repeatedly until the framing feels right before moving on.

3. Apply and download

Once the circle frames your subject the way you want, hit Apply Crop to cut the photo down to that shape immediately, on your own device with no upload involved. The download is a PNG with full transparency outside the circular boundary, ready to drop straight into a profile picture field, an app icon template, or a design file without any further editing to remove a square background. If the framing needs another pass, reprocess the same photo and reposition the circle as many times as you like before settling on a final version to save, at no cost and with no watermark ever added to it.

Frequently asked questions

Does the download come out as a perfect circle?
Yes. The crop box is locked to a 1:1 circle, and the exported file is a transparent PNG, so there's no square corner or background color left outside the round shape.
Can I stretch the circle into an oval?
No — the aspect is locked to keep it a true circle regardless of how you resize the selection, which matches what most profile picture and avatar fields expect.
Will the output work as a profile picture directly?
Yes. Because the background outside the circle is fully transparent, the cutout displays cleanly against any platform's own background color without a visible square edge.
