Compress PNG

PNG compresses poorly next to photo formats because it's built for pixel-exact detail, which is exactly why a plain logo or screenshot can somehow weigh several megabytes. This tool shrinks a PNG the way a dedicated PNG optimizer would: it rebuilds the color palette down to only the shades your image actually needs, dithers the transition so gradients stay believable instead of banding, then losslessly repacks the result. Every transparent pixel stays exactly as see-through as it started, and the file that comes out is still a PNG.

How it works

1. Drop your PNG files

Grab whatever .png screenshot, icon, or logo needs shrinking and drag it onto the drop zone above, or tap the same spot to browse your phone or computer's photo library. This works well for screenshots, app icons, logos, and any graphic exported with a transparent background, since those are exactly the files that balloon in size under PNG's own lossless compression. Everything loads straight into your browser the moment you drop it, so there's no upload step and no wait for a server to receive the file before the real work starts.

2. Set the quality and apply compression

The Quality slider in Adjust controls how aggressively the palette shrinks, so you can trade a touch more banding for a smaller file, or the reverse. After you press Apply, the tool rebuilds the palette, uses dithering to protect gradients, then losslessly repacks the result. All of this runs using your device's own processor, so a batch of icons or screenshots finishes in moments with no server involved.

3. Download your smaller PNG

Compare the before and after sizes shown beside each thumbnail — a busy screenshot or a colorful icon often ends up a fraction of its original size, still a PNG, and still fully transparent wherever it was before. One image saves on its own with a tap; several come back together zipped into a single download, already named and ready to use. Nothing about the file format changes unless you ask it to: the extension stays .png, so anything expecting a PNG still gets one, with no double-checking needed afterward. If you'd rather trade the PNG format itself for extra savings, WebP is available from the Export menu beside Download and still keeps every transparent pixel intact — worth trying for a background image on a page, less useful when an icon spec calls for PNG specifically.

Frequently asked questions

Will my PNG's transparent background survive compression?
Yes. Palette reduction and dithering treat transparency as just another channel, so transparent and semi-transparent pixels stay exactly as see-through as they started.
Does the output change format?
No — your PNG stays a PNG by default now. If you specifically want a WebP file for extra savings, choose it from the Export menu beside Download instead.
How does a PNG actually get smaller here?
